Stop the Save Our Bacon Act

The House passed the Farm Bill 224–200 on April 30, 2026 — with the SOB Act buried inside. It would erase 600+ state laws protecting animals, food safety, and state sovereignty. The Senate is next. We can still stop this.

What Is the Save Our Bacon Act?

The Save Our Bacon Act (SOB Act) is a rebranded version of the EATS Act — legislation pushed by the National Pork Producers Council. Its core function is federal preemption: it strips states of their right to set standards on agricultural products that exceed federal minimums.

Having lost at the Supreme Court in 2023 (National Pork Producers Council v. Ross), the pork industry is now using the Farm Bill to accomplish through Congress what it couldn't win in court.

Wipes out Prop 12
California's landmark farm animal protection law — and similar laws in Massachusetts, Oregon, Colorado, and Arizona — would be nullified.
Locks animals in cages
Hundreds of millions of farm animals would remain in extreme confinement as the laws designed to phase them out are eliminated.
Strips state sovereignty
Food safety, disease prevention, and labeling standards — many passed by voters via ballot initiative — would be overridden by federal minimums.
Blocks future protections
No state could ever pass meaningful farm animal protections again. Whatever exists today is the ceiling — forever.

What to Say

Use these word-for-word or adapt them. The most important thing is making the contact.

Call 202-224-3121 · Give your zip · Ask for your senator:

"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY/ZIP]. I'm calling to urge Senator [NAME] to vote NO on the Farm Bill in its current form. The bill includes the Save Our Bacon Act, which would override more than 600 state laws — including laws that voters passed directly through ballot initiatives — on animal welfare, food safety, and disease prevention. This is an extraordinary overreach of federal power that strips states of their right to set their own standards. It would lock hundreds of millions of farm animals into extreme confinement and block any state from ever passing meaningful protections in the future. I'm asking the Senator to oppose the Farm Bill unless the Save Our Bacon Act is removed. Thank you."
